Unlocking the Benefits of Microneedling

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that uses tiny, sterile needles to create micro-injuries or micro-channels in the skin. These small injuries stimulate the body’s natural collagen and elastin fiber production. Collagen is a protein essential for skin firmness and elasticity, while elastin helps the skin maintain its shape. Over time, as new skin cells develop, the skin becomes smoother, firmer, and more youthful. Sounds intense, right? It's suprisingly not!

What is microneedling good for?

Microneedling is generally safe and effective for a variety of skin concerns. Here are some of the benefits of microneedling:

  1. Reducing fine lines and wrinkles: Microneedling stimulates collagen and elastin production, which can help to smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

  2. Improving skin texture: Microneedling can improve the overall texture of the skin by reducing the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, and other imperfections.

  3. Minimising pores: Microneedling can help to reduce the size of pores, which can improve the appearance of the skin.

  4. Brightening complexion: Microneedling can help to improve skin tone and texture, resulting in a brighter, more radiant complexion.

  5. Enhancing absorption of skincare products: Microneedling creates tiny channels in the skin, which can help skincare products penetrate more deeply and effectively.

  6. Treating hyperpigmentation: Microneedling can help to reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation by breaking up excess melanin in the skin.

  7. Boosting collagen production: Microneedling stimulates the body's natural production of collagen, which can help to replace collagen lost as we age.

  8. Improve the appearance of scars: Microneedling can help to reduce the appearance of scars, including acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks.

  9. Helps treat hairloss: When used in conjunction with PRF and minoxidil, microneedling can stimulate hair growth.

  10. Can be used on all skin types: Microneedling is generally safe and effective for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

It is a ideal for treating specific skin concerns and as a skin maintenance treatment.

What happens during a microneedling treatment?

Microneedling takes ~45 minutes or longer, depending on the area being treated.

During a microneedling treatment, your practitioner will first cleanse and prepare your skin, removing any makeup and ensuring the skin is as clean as possible to prevent infection. They will also apply a numbing cream to minimize discomfort.

Once the skin is numbed, the microneedling device will then be gently passed over the skin, creating small punctures. The depth of the punctures will depend on the specific skin concern being targeted, as well as the type of device used. Typically, they will range from 0.5mm to 3.0mm, depending on the skin concern and area.

As the device moves across the skin, it will create microchannels that stimulate the body's natural healing response. This prompts the production of new collagen and elastin fibers, which help improve skin texture and tone.

After the microneedling is complete, your practitioner may apply a soothing serum or mask to help the cool the skin and promote healing and regeneration.

Post-Treatment Care

After the microneedling session, your skin may appear slightly red or tight, similar to a mild sunburn. These side effects are expected and typically subside within a day or two. Your provider may recommend specific skincare products, including moisturizers and SPF, to support the healing process. Avoiding direct sun exposure and keeping the skin hydrated following your treatment is essential.

Long-Term Results

As your skin starts to mend and rejuvenate, noticeable improvements in texture, tone, and general look are typically noticeable after a few weeks. Depending on the seriousness of the skin condition (such as deep wrinkles or acne scars), several treatments may be needed to get the best results. Most patients require 3-4 sessions about a month apart to see the best outcomes. After this initial series of treatments, maintenance sessions every six months to a year can help sustain the results.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Microneedling results can last several months, especially with a proper skincare routine. Since the treatment stimulates your skin’s natural collagen production, the improvements are gradual but long-lasting. Over time, your skin will continue to look healthier and more youthful as new collagen forms.
